Blood sample collection options

Finger prick kit (FREE)

All our kits require a finger prick blood sample which is quick and easy to do at home. But if you don't like the idea of squeezing blood out of your finger, here are some other options:

A home visit by a nurse (+£60)

Have a nurse visit you at home to take your blood sample from your vein. The kit will come with everything the nurse needs to do the blood sample collection. Once you've placed your order, we'll be in touch to arrange an appointment.

Visit a clinic (+£45)

You can visit one of our partner clinics to have a nurse take a blood sample from your vein. Select this option at checkout where you can also see which clinics are near you. Once you've placed your order, we'll send you an email to arrange your appointment.

Organise a nurse myself (FREE)

If none of the above options work for you, you can arrange your own medical professional to collect your sample. There is no additional charge for this. Once you've ordered your test, we'll send you everything you and your chosen medical professional will need to collect a sample and post it back to our labs.

You can choose your blood sample collection method in the checkout. Learn more about sample collection.

What is Total Testosterone?

Total testosterone is the overall amount of testosterone present in your blood, including both the unbound (free) form that can directly interact with cells and the bound form that is attached to proteins. While free testosterone is the biologically active form, total testosterone provides a comprehensive measure of testosterone levels in the bloodstream.

In the context of sports performance, total testosterone is considered a key indicator of your potential for muscle growth, strength, and endurance. It serves as a broad marker of your hormonal profile, which can influence your ability to train effectively and optimise your performance.

Regular monitoring of total testosterone levels can help you identify any potential hormonal imbalances that may be hindering your performance or recovery. This information can then be used to implement strategies to optimise testosterone production and overall health.

Why is Testosterone Important?

Testosterone's significance extends beyond physical appearance. It contributes to:

Muscle Growth and Strength: Testosterone stimulates muscle protein synthesis, enabling the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. This is particularly important for athletes seeking to enhance their performance.

Bone Density: Testosterone promotes bone growth and density, helping to prevent osteoporosis and fractures.

Red Blood Cell Production: Testosterone stimulates the production of red blood cells, which transport oxygen throughout the body. This improved oxygen delivery contributes to athletic endurance and performance.

Sex Drive: Testosterone regulates sex drive (libido) in men and women.

What Affects Testosterone Levels?

Testosterone levels are influenced by a range of factors, including:

Age: Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, starting around the age of 30.

Genetics: Individual genetic makeup plays a role in testosterone production.

Body Fat: Excess body fat can interfere with testosterone production.

Exercise: Regular physical activity can help maintain healthy testosterone levels, but overtraining and lack of rest can cause testosterone levels to decline, resulting in poor athletic performance.

Stress: Chronic stress can negatively impact testosterone production.

Sleep: Sufficient sleep is essential for optimal testosterone levels.

Diet: A healthy diet, rich in protein and essential nutrients, supports testosterone production.

Testosterone in Men and Women

Testosterone is primarily produced in men by the testes. In women, ovaries produce a small amount of testosterone, with adrenal glands also contributing to its synthesis. While testosterone levels are naturally higher in men, there is growing recognition of the importance of testosterone in women in maintaining their overall health and well-being.
